What is Posterior Capsular Opacification?

Cataract surgery is one of the most common operations carried out worldwide and though most patients are free from complications, some do require follow-up care to preserve their new level of eyesight. Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) occurs when the eye’s lens capsule becomes cloudy behind the synthetic implant, restricting the amount of light reaching the back of the eye and causing post-operative clarity to slip away. With a simple procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy, Sharmina Khan can restore your eyesight. YAG laser capsulotomy is fast, pain-free and hugely effective. If you have had cataract surgery in both eyes, you may need YAG laser surgery in both eyes too. Generally, PCO occurs within 6 months of cataract surgery, but the condition might develop in each eye at different rates. However, you shouldn’t need laser treatment in the same eye more than once.

The goal of YAG laser capsulotomy is to make a small opening in the opacified capsule that holds the intraocular lens. This new hole lets light pass into the eye more easily, enhancing your vision.

Advantages of YAG laser capsulotomy include its status as a one-time, quick, and pain-free treatment that doesn’t require surgery, carried out in an outpatient setting. The procedure takes only 2 to 5 minutes and is generally painless. However, your vision might be blurry temporarily due to the dilating drops used to prepare your eye for the YAG laser. Additionally, for the first week after the procedure, it’s common to notice floaters in your vision, such as black dots and cobwebs, but these should diminish within a few days.

YAG laser surgery is a simple procedure that is usually free of complications. As with any surgical procedure, however, there can be some side-effects, including a detached retina, ‘floaters’ caused by the membrane breaking up, increased eye pressure and inflammation.

A YAG laser capsulotomy is a simple procedure that can clear up any cloudiness developing on the eye’s natural lens capsule. First, anaesthetic eye drops are administered to numb the eye and the pupils are dilated, which will blur the vision temporarily. Then, the YAG laser is aimed at the rear of the lens capsule where it makes a small hole, enabling light to pass through.

Vision should improve within hours following the procedure.
