Can you prevent presbyopia?
Presbyopia is one of those things that creeps up on you—usually in your 40s—when suddenly you find yourself holding your phone at arm’s length to read a message.
It’s natural to ask: Can presbyopia be prevented?
The honest answer is no. Presbyopia is a natural part of ageing, and while you can’t stop it, there are ways to manage it and slow down some of its effects.
What causes presbyopia?
Inside your eye is a soft, flexible lens. When you’re young, this lens easily changes shape to help you focus at different distances. But as you age—typically from your 40s onward—that lens gradually stiffens and loses its ability to focus up close.
This loss of flexibility is what causes presbyopia. It happens to everyone, whether you’ve had perfect vision all your life or already wear glasses.
Can it be delayed?
You can’t stop the lens from ageing, but you may be able to delay the symptoms or reduce the severity through healthy habits. Here’s how:
1. Protect your eyes from UV damage
Wearing sunglasses with UV protection helps shield your eyes from harmful rays. Long-term UV exposure is thought to contribute to lens changes, so wearing sunglasses regularly may help maintain eye health longer.
2. Eat a balanced, eye-healthy diet
A diet rich in antioxidants (like vitamins A, C, and E), leafy greens, and omega-3 fatty acids supports the health of the eye’s lens and surrounding tissues.
Foods to include:
- Spinach
- Carrots
- Sweet potatoes
- Oily fish (like salmon or mackerel).
3. Stay hydrated and rested
Dehydration and fatigue can make vision feel worse. Staying well-hydrated and getting enough sleep helps your eyes perform at their best.
4. Use proper lighting when reading
Dim lighting forces your eyes to strain, which can make presbyopia symptoms feel worse. Always use adequate lighting for reading and close work.
5. Follow the 20-20-20 rule
To reduce eye strain:
- Every 20 minutes
- Look at something 20 feet away
- For at least 20 seconds.
This helps relax your eye muscles and may make near vision more comfortable.
6. Have regular eye checks
Catching presbyopia early allows you to manage it more effectively. Regular eye exams ensure that you’re using the right vision aids and help detect other age-related conditions like cataracts or glaucoma.
At Sharmina Khan Eye Clinic, we offer personalised treatment plans based on your lifestyle and vision goals.
Can exercises or eye training prevent presbyopia?
Unfortunately, no amount of eye exercises can reverse or prevent the stiffening of the lens. While exercises may help reduce eye strain, they don’t address the underlying cause of presbyopia.
What about supplements?
There’s no supplement proven to prevent presbyopia. However, maintaining general eye health with antioxidants and omega-3s may support your vision overall.
Final Thoughts
Presbyopia is a natural and universal part of gracefully ageing—but that doesn’t mean you have to accept blurry vision as inevitable. While you can’t prevent it entirely, you can protect your eye health and make informed choices when it arrives.
If you're in your 40s or older and noticing changes in your near vision, it’s worth taking action now.

“6/5. Incredibly impressed with Miss Khan’s bedside manner and operation and consultation. I have had the Synergy toric lens and have experienced a dramatic increase in distance vision. “I have had Lipiflow a few times now, and I couldn’t do without it because it really gets rid of my gritty and sore eyes for months at a time. Lipiflow has helped me go back to doing normal things without getting frustrated, like driving, tolerating air conditioning, generally tolerating different humidity levels, and not feeling like I need to use eye drops all the time. I would highly recommend it.”
