Can I drive 2 days after cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is a quick and effective procedure that restores vision by replacing the cloudy natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). While the surgery itself has a fast recovery time, one of the most common questions patients ask is, “Can I drive two days after cataract surgery?” The answer depends on several factors, including the type of lens implanted and how your eyes are healing.
When can you resume driving after cataract surgery?
Most patients can resume driving within 24 to 48 hours, but this varies based on individual recovery. It is important to follow these guidelines before getting behind the wheel:
- Doctor’s clearance – Your surgeon will assess your vision during your post-op check-up and determine if it’s safe for you to drive
- Clear and comfortable vision – If your vision is still blurry or you are experiencing glare, it’s best to wait until these symptoms subside
- No double vision – Double vision or issues with depth perception can make driving unsafe.
How lens type affects driving after surgery
The type of intraocular lens (IOL) used in your cataract surgery can affect how quickly you can return to driving:
- Monofocal lenses – Provide clear vision at a single distance (near or far). If you had monofocal lenses implanted and still require glasses for certain distances, ensure you have the right prescription before driving.
- Multifocal lenses – Offer vision correction at multiple distances. Some patients experience halos or glare at night, which can impact night time driving but do not affect driving during the day.
- Toric lenses – these correct astigmatism, reducing visual distortions. These lenses improve driving clarity but may require an adjustment period.
Signs you shouldn’t drive yet
If you experience any of the following symptoms, it’s best to delay driving:
- Blurry or hazy vision
- Sensitivity to bright lights
- Difficulty judging distances
- Discomfort or dry eyes

“Had cataract surgery on both eyes simultaneously last week and, 7 days later, the vision is brilliant. I can see to read as well, including small print smaller than I expected! I can see car number plates at the end of the road. Everything was excellent, and I could not have wished for anything better.”

“6/5. Incredibly impressed with Miss Khan’s bedside manner and operation and consultation. I have had the Synergy toric lens and have experienced a dramatic increase in distance vision. Now, I am able to read stuff on the television perfectly, and reading small print, I can now read the back of a tin of beans!”

“Miss Khan was very professional, and both my eyes had trifocal intra-ocular lens implants (toric in the left). The risks and benefits were explained to my satisfaction, and I was very nervous. However, the procedure and the recovery were painless. I now have perfect unaided vision in both eyes and would recommend Miss Khan, 10 out of 10.”

“I have had Lipiflow a few times now, and I couldn’t do without it because it really gets rid of my gritty and sore eyes for months at a time. Lipiflow has helped me go back to doing normal things without getting frustrated, like driving, tolerating air conditioning, generally tolerating different humidity levels, and not feeling like I need to use eye drops all the time. I would highly recommend it.”
